In its 35th and farewell season, the Schubert Ensemble returns to Cambridge Summer Music for one final visit, with a programme of passion and nostalgia.
Vaughan Williams quintet was only recently discovered, but its rich romanticism tinged with poignant longing make a perfect foil to Dvořák’s exuberant, folk-inspired second piano quartet.
In between is the Schubert Ensemble’s 50th and final commission, Judith Weir’s tender and witty re-imagining of Schubert’s song Abschied, or ‘Farewell’, a warm and personal ‘goodbye’ from a composer who has collaborated regularly with the Ensemble throughout its career.
“The Schubert Ensemble are not only adept at delivering the melodic side without an ounce of sentimentality, they show a strong appreciation of the inherent drama that energises these works, particularly the [Dvorak] Piano Quartet; I have rarely encountered a more satisfying performance of its first movement, and the depth the players bring to the Lento is remarkable.” BBC Music Magazine
“The Schubert Ensemble of London are a marvellously unified ensemble, imparting their energy and lyricism to anything to which they turn their expert hands.” Classic FM Magazine
“They gave a performance so forthright and passionate that at times it sounded as if a chamber orchestra were playing. A hugely impressive concert…” Strad
