11 Apr Sounds Green: AfroTema
Wednesday 3 July 2019, 6.15pm
Cambridge University Botanic Garden
Makhou vocals, keys and African percussion
On Wednesday evenings in July Cambridge University Botanic Garden rings to the sound of live music when we present Sounds Green – the best in open-air music. Bring a rug and a picnic; open to all ages. Food, ice creams and drinks on sale.
From the sandy streets of Senegal to leafy Cambridge, local band AfroTema plays Senegalese salsa, furious mbalax, afro-rock and some serious roots reggae. The band’s original music is inspired by the tempo of Dakar, maternal wisdom and the daily experience of the African diaspora. The band has been enjoyed at many Cambridge events – from the Big Day Out on Parker’s Piece to more intimate venues like the Cellar Bar, the Centre at St Paul’s and Hot Numbers. Wherever they perform AfroTema gets an irresistible reaction from people to let go and live the moment.
Music from 6.15pm to 7.30pm; garden closes at 8.00pm
Retiring collection towards the cost of concerts – please look out for stewards bearing buckets as you leave!
Please note: Due to limited capacity and to avoid disappointment all paying visitors should buy garden tickets in advance via the Botanic Garden website, on sale from June 2019. Tickets may also be available on the gate, but this cannot be guaranteed. Garden Admission ticket prices. Friends of the Botanic Garden and CU students are admitted free.
