Carl Reinecke Sonata ‘Undine’ Op. 167 for flute and piano

Flautist Rosie Bowker (who studied for her first degree at Christ’s College, Cambridge) is joined by Polish pianist Aleksandra Myslek to present a programme of Romantic pieces for flute and piano. They open with a sonata by Mel (Mélanie) Bonis, a prolific French composer with more than 300 works to her name, who studied at the Paris Conservatoire alongside Debussy and Pierné, The concert finishes with a Reinecke flute sonata, inspired by a popular 19th century novella about a water sprite by the German author Fouqué. In between, Aleksandra performs a Barcarolle by Fauré – a form he experimented with throughout his composing career. It is derived from the folk songs traditionally sung by Venetian gondoliers, and was also much loved by Chopin and Mendelssohn.
