Pre-Festival Event: Lord Smith – The State of the Arts

Monday 2 July 2018, 6pm
Old Library, Pembroke College
By kind permission of the Master and Fellows of Pembroke College

Lord Chris Smith (Former Culture Secretary) Master of Pembroke College

Pre-talk radio interview with Chris Smith

Chris Smith, former Culture Secretary, who was made a Life Peer in 2005, will reflect on the past twenty years of Arts achievement and policy in Britain – and on where we are now, still to a certain extent living off the legacy of a golden age, but with major challenges and issues confronting us. He will argue for the overwhelming importance of the arts in society, both for intrinsic and for practical reasons, and will lament their neglect by contemporary politics and policy.

During his four years as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Chris Smith – now Lord Smith of Finsbury – restored free admission to national museums and galleries, and established the Film Council, Creative Partnerships for schools and the Foundation for Youth Music.
